A Memorable Journey Through the Kashmir Valley
A journey around Srinagar is an experience filled with beautiful landscapes, peaceful lakes, snow-capped mountains, historic sites and warm Kashmiri hospitality. Often described as the heart of the Kashmir Valley, Srinagar provides an ideal base for exploring some of the most scenic destinations in northern India.
My trip around Srinagar was a wonderful combination of sightseeing, relaxation, local culture and mountain adventures. From an early-morning Shikara ride on Dal Lake to exploring the valleys around Gulmarg and Pahalgam, every day brought a new view of Kashmir.
Arrival in Srinagar
The journey began with my arrival in Srinagar, where the landscape immediately felt different from the busy cities of the plains. Mountains surrounded the valley, while willow and poplar trees lined the roads.
The cool air and peaceful scenery created an immediate sense of being somewhere special.
After checking into the hotel, I spent the evening exploring the local area and enjoying traditional Kashmiri food.
Morning on Dal Lake
The highlight of the first morning was a Shikara ride on Dal Lake.
The experience was peaceful and unforgettable. The lake was relatively calm, and the surrounding mountains reflected beautifully in the water. Colorful Shikaras moved slowly across the lake while houseboats remained anchored along the waterways.
One of the most interesting aspects was seeing the floating life of Dal Lake. Vendors occasionally approached in their small boats selling flowers, handicrafts and local products.
The early morning light made the entire lake look almost magical.
Exploring Srinagar City
After the Shikara ride, I explored some of Srinagar’s historic and cultural attractions.
The Mughal Gardens were particularly impressive. Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh and Chashme Shahi showcase the distinctive garden traditions developed during the Mughal period.
The combination of landscaped terraces, fountains, flowers and mountain views makes these gardens some of the most beautiful places in Srinagar.
The city’s old neighborhoods also offer a glimpse into Kashmiri architecture and traditional life.
Hazratbal Shrine
A visit to the Hazratbal Shrine provided a different perspective on Srinagar’s cultural and religious heritage.
Located beside Dal Lake, the white marble shrine is an important Muslim pilgrimage site and one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.
The setting is particularly beautiful, with the lake and mountains forming a dramatic backdrop.
A Day Trip to Gulmarg
The next part of the journey took me toward Gulmarg, a spectacular mountain destination located roughly 50 kilometres from Srinagar.
Gulmarg looked completely different from Srinagar. Vast meadows, pine forests and towering mountains created an impressive landscape.
The Gulmarg Gondola is one of the major attractions. The cable car climbs toward the higher slopes, offering spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan scenery.
In winter, Gulmarg becomes a major destination for snow and skiing, while the warmer months provide green meadows and pleasant mountain walks.
Pahalgam: Into the Valley
Another memorable excursion was to Pahalgam, a beautiful town surrounded by forests and mountains.
The journey to Pahalgam itself was enjoyable, with changing landscapes and mountain scenery along the route.
The Lidder River runs through the valley, creating a peaceful environment ideal for walking and photography. The surrounding forests and meadows made Pahalgam feel much quieter than the more crowded tourist areas.
It was one of those places where simply sitting beside the river and enjoying the scenery felt like an activity in itself.
Local Kashmiri Cuisine
No trip to Kashmir is complete without experiencing its food.
During the journey, I had the opportunity to sample traditional Kashmiri dishes and local flavors. Rogan Josh, Yakhni, Dum Aloo and Kashmiri Pulao are among the dishes visitors should consider trying.
Kahwa, the traditional Kashmiri saffron-infused tea, was particularly enjoyable on cool mornings and evenings.
The food added another memorable dimension to the trip.
Shopping in Srinagar
Srinagar’s markets are famous for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and textiles.
Visitors can find Pashmina products, Kashmiri carpets, papier-mâché crafts, walnut woodwork and traditional embroidered items.
Shopping from reputable sellers and checking product authenticity is important, particularly when purchasing expensive handicrafts.
The Beauty of a Kashmir Sunset
One of the most memorable moments of the trip was watching the sunset over the mountains and Dal Lake.
As the sky changed color, the water reflected the surrounding landscape and the Shikaras gradually returned toward the shore.
It was a quiet reminder that Kashmir’s greatest attraction is often its scenery rather than any single monument.
Best Time for a Srinagar Trip
Srinagar offers a different experience in every season.
April to June is excellent for gardens, flowers and pleasant weather. July to September brings greener landscapes, although rainfall can affect some travel plans.
October and November offer beautiful autumn colors, while December to February attracts travelers interested in winter landscapes and snowfall.
Conditions can vary considerably in the mountains, so travelers should check weather and local travel conditions before heading toward higher-altitude destinations.

The quiet waters of Dal Lake, the gardens of Srinagar, the mountains of Gulmarg, the peaceful valley of Pahalgam and the flavors of Kashmiri cuisine together created a journey full of memorable moments.
Srinagar is not simply a gateway to Kashmir—it is an experience in itself, where lakes, gardens, mountains, culture and hospitality come together to create one of India’s most unforgettable travel destinations.
